The Cherating Turtle Sanctuary is one of the best places to visit when you are holidaying in Cherating. This is because apart from the sun and sea, here is where you will be able to observe life at its best and most natural. Located beside Club Med here the Sanctuary started off in 1972 as a turtle hatchery meant to help preserve the leatherback turtle which is very commonly seen here.
It opened its door to the public in 1998 at Chendor Beach where it wanted to educated the public about the importance of preserving this species and to help curb egg thieves.
The best time to come here would be around the months of April to August as it is the season when the turtles come here to lay eggs. Trips into the Sanctuary are usually at night and you will be alerted when the center detects any turtles crawling onto the beach.
There are in total 7 different marine turtles of which 4 of them come to Malaysia which are the Leatherback Turtle, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Olive Ridley Turtle respectively with the Leatherbacks being the most common. Operated by the Department of Fisheries, the center is opened for the public at no charge although you will need to be aware of your manners when you are there.

In Cherating, the most prominent and popular attraction here are its beaches. This is because Cherating beach is known for its thick sandy beaches which seems to go on forever. Its gushing waves and the natural scenery here are unmatchable to those of the west coast.
Located about 50km towards the north of Kuantan, the state capital of Pahang, Cherating beach is peaceful, unspoilt and just inspiring. One of the things which you must do when you are in Cherating apart from sanding and surfing is to take a cruise on a boat down the Cherating River. It will be quite an eye opener which is affordable and at the same time educate you on the wonders of nature.
