Hill Indigo (??)

From Jeff's Taiwan , 4 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Indigo, one of civilization's oldest dyes, has tinted the robes of Egyptian pharaohs and brightened the clothing of both Chinese peasant and American farmhand (think Levis jeans). Before cotton was "King", indigo was one of the U.S. Deep South's most important cash crops. More from Double Ninth

From Josh in Taiwan, 1 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

With the rain being sent our way from Typhoon Megi (though not the typoon itself – that’s pretty far south), I’m not sure if I’ll get the camera outside of the apartment this weekend. ?This is a shame, but might give me some time to look at other older photos and probably give the D5000 a good cleaning. Below are ?some more shots from Double Ninth. While I think the above photo’s framing could be more dramatic, I liked the contrasts put on by this ancient Chinese... Read more

Taiwan Cycle, Day 4

From Down in Tainan, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Now this will be a very short post. When we began cycling, two things were immediately apparent. Firstly, the sun was gone, hidden behind cloud. This was a kind of blessing as it made the day a lot cooler. However, it also meant that sometime later in the week, the rain would come. And secondly, we were riding into the wind, and we would be riding into it all the way north. We knew before we began the trip that the wind on the east coast would be against us, but I don't think none of us... Read more

Betel nut farming

From Down in Tainan, 2 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

This is from a day trip to my friends' plot of land in Pindong where they are growing betel nut trees (to harvest betel nut) and a few banana trees.  My job was to help clean up the land, which was left in a pretty bad state by the previous caretaker.  Thousands of rubbish bags that have been left to rot  under the soil need to be removed and too many banana trees that are taking over the land.  Banana tree leaves are huge!! The husky doing what it can to cool... Read more

Taiwan Story Land - Taiwan 1950's Style for Kids

From kidzone-tw, 1 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

This photo review by a friend of mine really shows you what this museum/hands-on area is about.  Situated across from Taipei Main Station, next to the Mitsokushi building, and with an entrance fee of TWD200 per person, it is a nice place to take the kids for a morning or afternoon.  You can make snacks from the 1950's, play games from the era, and get a feel for Taiwan life that that time. I have a feeling I have written about this place before, if you find another post please... Read more

typhoon pics

From Lomicus Dorkus (The Daily Lomo), 3 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

September 14, 2008 - Raohe St. where the night market opens up at . . . night. Typhoon means holiday, so people use the road as a normal road and park along it. The numbers on the street are where booths go, obviously, and the chalk stickmen are where pedestrian lanes are supposed to be. That's mostly theory, though, not necessarily practice.Swine flu all over the news. CNN on constant coverage, we had the words "swine flu" on practically every page of the newspaper today. We don't like to... Read more

Paris through my eyes

From Rubli.info's Blog, 1 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Every so often I remember that I forgot to post a bunch of photos on my website only to forget it again two minutes later. This is _not_ one of those times. This time I actually posted them. On our three-day Paris trip last year I got a little bored of stereotype Paris. It's really just like you know it from TV with one big exception; the tourists and their side effects are mostly missing in TV Paris. Real Paris, however, is teeming with tourists, street vendors and other ripper-offers - pretty... Read more

Happy 99th Birthday Taiwan!

From Mike's blog Jounal, 1 year ago, Read 0 times. Similar articles

Happy 99th Birthday (Double Ten National Day) to you, Taiwan! Although it is actually an anniversary of an uprising or independence that led to the establishment of the Republic of China (that later retreated to the province of Taiwan after the Chinese civil war), I would also like to agree that it does hold an important significance to the birth of Taiwan as an independent democratic country. And thank you Taiwan for all the wonderful experiences. I'm so looking forward to attending next... Read more
